The 2002 BBAAIP Conference
was held in Juneau this year at the Historic Silverbow Inn. Registration began at
noon on Friday, April 5th followed by a delicious lunch catered by the Silverbow Inn
staff. Tables were filled with informative books on decorating ideas, business &
finance, cooking, start-up and many others. Printed materials were on hand for review and
many hand-outs were offered.
|
| The conference was
opened by Chairperson, Wanda Vandergriff and Deb Woodruff served as Conference Chair. |
At 2 pm
a panel of tourism professionals provided interesting thoughts, ideas, trends and facts.
The panel consisted of Lorene Kappler from JCVB; Diane Pearson, a successful travel
business owner; Tom Lucido, Internet Marketing & Moriah Mountain Internet Marketing;
Lillian Ruedrich, State Tourism Office; and Sharon Gaiptman, AK Marine Hwy. |

|
| To finish off the day,
some boarded a large bus and some of us followed as we began a two part tour of some of
Juneau's finest Bed & Breakfast properties. The tour on Friday began with
B&Bs in the downtown area. Touring the conference host city's B&Bs has become and
annual event that many of us especially look forward to as one of the most enlightening
events of the conference. |
| On Saturday morning the
group gathered for the Annual Meeting. Minutes of this
meeting and other recent meetings can be found on this website in the list of forms on
our Innkeepers Page. The meeting was followed by a report
from XXXX of the McDowell Group on "Trends in Tourism for 2002". The
highlight of the afternoon was a discussion lead by Internet Guru, Tom Lucido. Most of the
group members also attended Tom's evening seminar, "Make the Most of Your Marketing
Dollars". This three hour seminar was full of information on developing a strong full
media marketing plan. Participants received information on basic techniques for creating a
marketing plan for their business, for their goals and budget. Later in the afternoon,
Jackie Stewart of Juneau's Small Business Development Center talked about business
financing. |

Later that
afternoon, vendors gathered in the Cedar Room at the Goldbelt Hotel to share products and
service ideas. There were lots of door prizes (thanks to these vendors) and a chance for
members to network with both Innkeepers and tour and industry service providers. |

| Sunday morning the group
gathered at the Silverbow once again for a fun and informative cooking demo by our host,
Ken Alper, of the Silverbow Inn. Ken was full of useful tips and expert ideas. After the
demonstration, Ken allowed us to tour the Silverbow Bagel Shop! We watched as he explained
all that went into the art of making his fabulous bagels. Once again we boarded the bus for the second
part of the B&B tour that included the Valley properties. The tour ended at Pearson's
Pond Luxury Inn & Spa where Diane & Steve Pearson were our hosts for the ending
reception where we had a chance to exchange business cards and say goodbye to both new and
old friends. |

Del Cummings of the Silverbow took a moment from his very busy morning to smile for
the camera.
