Sitka, Alaska

Sitka was the Russian capital of Alaska from 1808 to 1867and the Alaska territory capital until 1906. Today Sitka blends traditional Tlingit culture, buildings, historic and building sites from the Russian era with a thriving   contemporary small community. Looking west over the Pacific Ocean, Sitka offers: extensive protected islands for kayaking, unique shops for gifts, one of the best collections of Native Alaska artifacts (and gifts) is at the Sheldon Jackson Museum, the Sitka National Historical Totem Park and Sitka's famous historic icons at St. Michael's Cathedral.
